And somewhere in the house, the master stirred when they’d opened his heart coffin, and tossed and turned, but did not wake. At least, not yet.

Lily was jealous. That had to be the only explanation for the way she’d been acting lately. That’s why Lily kept telling her to stop doing the Happy Family game, and that’s why Lily tried to put the dolls up after Rae had taken down the sentinel books. She was going to have to stop Lily, somehow. This had to happen, the Happy Family Game would be finished, and their family would be together, and everything would be all right again. Certainly, she had her doubts, that maybe the game was wrong, maybe everything was wrong . . .

But Lily telling her to stop only proved that she was on the right track!

The digital camera was so tiny and weightless in her hands, almost about the exact same weight as a dead bird. How funny that was! It was almost like she was filming everything through the eyes of a dead bird. She held the dead bird camera up as they walked through random new hallways. Here were new places that cropped up and shot off from the living room, the dining room, the kitchen. Strange new places with nails out all crooked, like the walls were yanked apart and ready for surgery. How funny it was to walk through the wounds of the house.

Wounds of the house, wounds of the house, how she loved saying those words, wounds of the house wounds of the house, the dead bird camera focused now on whatever Daddy pointed at.

“Are you getting this, sweetheart, oh Rae my dove? This is magic right here, both literal magic and filmic magic as well!”

And then they went a few feet in, further and further and further. Stained glass crawled up
